How Working Out Became My Favorite Hobby

I've always been pretty active from grade school to high school because of sports. Whether I had track every day or being at cheerleading practice, I was always on the move. I was never one to go to the gym or do any other types of workouts. But, after high school, It was a whole different ball game for me. I was no longer a part of any sports, so it was almost like, "uh, ok. What do I do now, especially for a workout?"

I would go running from time to time, but I was never consistent with it, and college wasn't a huge help either with going out every weekend with friends. I started to get out of shape because of it and gained some weight. I wanted to see if there was a workout out there that I'd like. Getting back into shape was my new goal. I hated feeling lazy.

I started to get out of shape because of it and gained some weight. I wanted to see if there was a workout out there that I'd like. Getting back into shape was my new goal. I hated feeling lazy.

I was always into the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. I have always adored the women who model for the company and the big runway show around Christmas. Even though the fashion show got canceled last year, I still keep tabs on the models. One model, in particular, is Adriana Lima. I've been fangirling for years. Besides her beauty, Adriana is a powerful, bad-ass woman, and that's what I admire most about her. I started to look into what she does for workouts, and I found out that one of her passions besides modeling is kickboxing.

I started researching different kickboxing classes. It turns out there was a place five minutes away from my house, how perfect. My first night of kickboxing was hard. I had no idea what I was doing. Since I was alone, I felt out of my comfort zone trying something new, but the instructors made me feel comfortable. I realized how good of a workout it is. Despite how badly sore I was the next day, I decided to give it a go and signed up. Since then, I've loved going.

Once I got to Penn State, I was away from my typical kickboxing classes, and the ones near me were way too expensive. That's when I started working out at the gym and started to enjoy it too. I also followed a couple of gym influencers on Instagram and went by their varied workouts. By then, I started working out pretty frequently.

Whenever I was home for break, I'd try to get a couple of kickboxing classes in, but this is when I realized that switching workouts were, sort of nice. After college, I got right back into going consistently, but then came Covid-19. When this virus first became a thing, and everything was shutting down, I couldn't go to the gym or kickboxing. That's when I found a new love for yoga during quarantine.

Now, since things are starting to open back up, I'm back to kickboxing and the gym, and I still like to switch up my workouts from time to time. I don't have a strict schedule either. What kind of workout I do depends on what I'm feeling that day. Some days I'll feel like jump roping for 10 minutes, and others, I will do 20-30 minutes of yoga because I want to relax. I usually work out four times a week and make sure to have rest days in between because I don't want to overwork my body; that's important.

This is when working out started to become a favorite hobby of mine. I genuinely enjoy working out, and it makes me feel good. Whether you want to get in shape or find a new hobby, I suggest trying out a new workout; there are so many different kinds you can try! If you do not work out or you want to start, I suggest trying out something new. You never know what you'll end up liking, even if it seems intimidating or you're already having second thoughts.

If I would've listened to my negative thoughts way back, I wouldn't be enjoying kickboxing as much as I am today. I like doing different types of workouts to switch it up, but everyone's different too. I'm not one to run miles every day, but some people genuinely enjoy doing so. Kickboxing, running, weights, yoga, biking, etc. There's a workout out there for you.
